The Single Disc Cutter is the primary TBM excavation tool, positioned as face, transition, or gauge cutters. Composed of a ring, shaft, and bearings, its design ensures easy maintenance. It fractures rock (UCS 25–180MPa) such as granite and sandstone through rolling indentation and crack coalescence, handling the bulk of tunnel fragmentation. It is available in Back-loading (industry standard for safety) or Front-loading configurations.

A type of disc cutter in which a series of cemented carbide button inserts are embedded into the cutter ring, replacing the conventional continuous cutting edge. Variants include single-disc cutters with button inserts, twin-disc center cutters with button inserts, and gauge cutters with button inserts. Classified as impact-resistant tooling, this design represents an upgraded alternative to smooth-profile (kerf) disc cutters.

A triple-ring disc cutter is a type of disc cutter featuring three cutter rings. It is primarily used in micro-tunnel boring machine equipment (such as AVN small tunnel boring machines, slurry balance shield machines, and pipe jacking machines) and can be installed on the face, edge, and center positions of the cutter head.

An integrally formed double-edge cutter ring is fixed onto a single main shaft. The two cutting edges are separated by an annular groove in the middle. As a single cutter ring, the two edges cannot rotate independently and operate in synchronous rotation. The structure is compact, with moderate lateral stability and weak torsional resistance. It is primarily used in the middle and transition zones of the cutterhead, rather than serving as the center cutter. II. Main Applications Positioned between single-edge disc cutters and center double disc cutters, it crushes two grooves simultaneously, increasing the spacing between rock-breaking grooves. Arranged in the outer ring of the center cutters and transition zones to assist in groove widening and reduce the load on single-edge disc cutters. Suitable for rock formations with medium hardness and abundant joints, accelerating the coalescence of cracks. III. Advantages (1) It creates wider rock-breaking grooves. Under the same thrust, it spalls larger rock blocks, resulting in higher excavation efficiency compared to single-edge cutters. (2) It features good overall rigidity, and its assembly and disassembly are simpler than those of double disc cutters.

Positioned between a single-edged roller cutter and a central double cutter, it crushes two grooves at once to increase the rock-breaking groove spacing. Arranged in the outer ring and transition area of the central cutter to assist in groove expansion and reduce the load on single-edged roller cutters. Suitable for rock formations of medium hardness with many joints, accelerating crack propagation and coalescence.

Carbide-studded disc cutters are disc cutters in which several tungsten carbide inserts (buttons) are embedded on the cutter ring to replace the continuous solid cutting edge. They are categorized into studded single-edged roller cutters, studded central double cutters, and studded gauge cutters. As impact-resistant cutters, they serve as an upgraded version of smooth cutter rings. I. Structural Features The cutter ring matrix is made of alloy steel. The tungsten carbide inserts are fixed in the tooth holes via interference press-fitting or shrink-fitting. Common shapes of carbide inserts include spherical, wedge, conical, and bullet-head teeth. The internal bearings, oil seals, and spindle structures are fully interchangeable with those of standard smooth single-edged roller cutters, allowing for direct replacement of the entire cutter assembly. II. Applicable Geological Formations Fractured surrounding rock, rock formations with well-developed joints, and rocks with numerous fissures. Weathered rock, gravel layers, alternating hard and soft strata, and fault zones. Formations that generate severe vibrations and high impact loads during excavation, which easily cause chipping of solid cutting edges. III. Advantages (1) Strong impact resistance, significantly reducing the risk of overall cutter ring cracking or cutting edge spalling. (2) Concentrated point loading makes it easier to wedge into fissured rock, resulting in superior rock fragmentation and loosening effects. (3) Worn carbide inserts can be replaced individually, leading to lower maintenance costs. (4) Offers a more stable service life than smooth cutters under jamming and bouncing conditions.

The material of the disc cutter ring is the key factor determining whether the disc cutter can effectively tunnel through hard rock. To address different geological formations, our company offers a variety of cutter ring materials to choose from. Generally, there are four types of disc cutter ring profiles: standard cutter rings, wide-blade cutter rings, heavy-duty cutter rings, and alloy-insert cutter rings, designed to meet the demands of various geological conditions.
